KICTB Wezesha Student Laptop Purchase Program - 14,730 students purchased laptops!

In November 2010, 42 KENET member universities / university colleges were identified to participate in the Kenya ICT Board Wezesha project that aimed to help your students purchase their own laptops. Each student received a subsidy voucher of about $100. In the end, only 40 universities/university colleges participated and 40,000 students registered in the program.

At the end of 12 months in November 2011, 14,730 had purchased laptops using the subsidy vouchers. This is a significant increase in student-owned laptops and represents about 7% of the estimated 220,000 university student population. Attached is a worksheet the number of students from the different universities who purchased laptops.

Open Questions

a.       Do you know if most of the laptops were being used in your campus networks?

b.      Do you know the distribution of the laptops in terms of year of study and how many have already graduated?

c.       Would you like KICTB to launch a similar initiative in the future (it was a $2 million initiative) or would you rather they supported your institutions directly in the same way they subsidized institutional bandwidth purchase?
